Precipitated by that Blue Planet episode, the plastic and packaging debate is only getting louder, consumers are increasingly educated about the environmental crisis and demand for solutions is growing exponentionally. More than 90% of respondents in a 2018 Populus poll raised serious concerns about the impact of plastic pollution and supported the introduction of a Plastic Free Aisle in their local supermarket.

The consumer is ready and willing, but looking for convenient ways to ‘do their bit’; and field fare’s trailblazing loose serve range is a brilliantly simple entry point. Across over 80 lines, including premium Grade A fruit and veg, frozen within hours of harvesting, fish and baked goods from specialist producers, and international specialities including authentic pizza dough, Biryani and Mediterranean Veg mixes, customers simply scoop precise amounts into biodegradable field fare bags, weigh and pay. Minimal packaging, maximum quality, complete authenticity, zero food waste.
And with that format comes the further potential for retailers to expand their eco-credentials by offering Bring Your Own container initiatives, enabling customers to simply weigh their empty, reusable pots, fill, re-weigh and pay for the difference between the two. Or easier still, to take a suggested flat 5p or 10p off the total filled weight, with some shops donating this amount to charity. Across over 400 UK-wide, purely independent stockists, field fare retailers are reaping far reaching benefits ...

“I’m very pleased to see our customers responding so enthusiastically and supportively – some are even bringing back the cartons that our salads are sold in to fill with other products, which is most satisfying. Next year, we are looking into adding dried goods to the initiative and to be as sustainable as possible.” Katherine Brown, co-owner Roots Farm Shop, Northallerton
[Our customers have been] filling everything from ice cream tubs to glass jars. They simply take their empty container to the till before they fill it and tell us what is going in it. We then weigh it and calculate the price to deduct when it’s filled. A straightforward way to start making a real difference. George Dobson, co-owner Manor Farm Shop, Chelmsford
Our customers are responding equally enthusiastically to the opportunity to do their bit for reducing plastic waste and the response on our facebook page has been great – with a lot of people vociferously supporting the initiative - David Cross, manager Thornhill Farm Shop, Cardiff
